Launching an online casino in the United Kingdom
The UK is Europe's largest regulated online gambling market and one of its most demanding. What the licence requires, how it is taxed since April 2026, and what that means for a new brand. Checked on 27 September 2026.
What licence does an online casino need in the UK?
A remote operating licence from the Gambling Commission. Since 2014 the licence has been required of every operator that serves players in Great Britain, wherever the operator is based — an offshore or EU licence does not replace it.
The Gambling Commission sets some of the strictest conduct rules in the world: identity and age checks before play, affordability and harm monitoring, online slot stakes capped at £5 a spin for adults over 25 and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, and no credit cards for gambling. Its licensing process examines the company, the people in key roles and the systems, and certified games and platforms are expected.

How is online casino taxed in the UK?
Remote gaming duty rose from 21% to 40% of gross gaming profit for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2026. Online betting moves to a new 25% remote betting rate from April 2027.
The changes were announced in the 2025 Autumn Budget. At 40% the duty takes a large share of the margin before bonuses, payments and marketing — the UK now suits established operators with scale more than new brands.
What does this mean for a launch on WW Games?
Serving British players requires the Gambling Commission licence, and the Commission expects certified systems. Licensing is the operator's responsibility. WW Games does not hold or sublicense a gambling licence, and holds no third-party certifications today — so for a UK-licensed operation, a certified platform is likely the better fit.
We say this plainly rather than let it surface in due diligence. What we do and do not claim on certification is on security, and certified platforms are compared on white label providers.
